All The Details...

Construction Techniques

At Deluxe Industries we hand build high quality, light weight, eco friendly wooden surfboards. Our proprietary hollow construction technique allows us to create lightweight boards of infinitely variable rocker, outline, and foil, with full concaves, channels and vees.

We also build boards using solid, chambered and laminated techniques.

Custom Boards

We don’t sell a standard range of one-size fits all, wooden cookie cutter boards. Each of the boards we create is unique. We apply our knowledge to build a completely custom board to suit you and your surfing style.

Wood

We build wooden surfboards, no foam. This means our blanks have spent several years sequestering carbon from the atmosphere before they get made into boards. We use sustainably harvested and recycled woods from around the world. Where possible we use wood grown locally in New Zealand, and recycled wood from skips and demolitions.  Balsa used to build our surfboards is plantation grown, eco friendly balsa from Papua New Guinea and Equador.

Fin Systems

We can create wooden fins to suit you and your board. You get the option of glass on or FCS compatible Motivationlines or Tri plug boxes or Future Fin System. Fins from $140.

The Vent

To stop deformation and delamination, all our hollow boards come fitted with a Gortex membrane vent. This allows the board to breathe automatically with changes in temperature. All a Gortex vent will require from you is the occasional check to ensure its not blocked with wax or sand.

Resin

All boards are glassed with solvent free epoxy resin.

In comparison to polyester resin;

It contains up to 75% less VOCs

It is approximately 30% stronger

We use approximately 70% less resin to glass a board

It is clearer

It is slower to yellow

And it cleans up with soap and water.

Fiberglass Cloth

Despite a number of alternative products, fiberglass is still the most efficient product to use for glassing our surfboards. Due to the strength and density of the wooden blanks, we use less than half the amount of cloth needed for a foam board.

Clearcoats

We use low VOC, scratch resistant clear coats designed for the automotive industry. It keeps your stick looking glossy and stops UV light from degrading your board.

Glues

All glues used to construct blanks are water based. Better for the environment, better for our health.

Waste

The high quality materials we use are expensive, so it’s in our interest to build boards with a minimum of wastage. We do our best to use wood off cuts, what we can’t use we compost or use for mulch.

Trees

Each time we sell a board we plant two native trees, one to offset the carbon emissions during production and shipping, and one to make us feel good and ensure we have something to build with in the future! Thinking global, acting local. We're even planting trees to supply ourselves with alternative species of wood in several years time.
